A Closer Look, found online at A-Closer-Look.com, is a marketing and mystery shopping company that gives businesses the necessary customer feedback they need to expertly improve their services and stay competitive within their industries.

According to their website, this company works with businesses in the Restaurant, Hotel, Retail Store, Health & Wellness, and Professional Service provider industries to help them get a better understanding of their customer relations and services.

They do this by employing “expert” mystery shoppers, who they say will provide their companies with detailed reports of their experiences as well as with suggestions for improvements or changes.

What is Mystery Shopping?

Mystery shoppers are employed by A Closer Look and then given an assignment to interact with a specific client of theirs. For example, they may be told to go to a local pizzeria for dinner, with optional specifics like ordering certain menu items or “experiencing” certain issues or problems during the meal.

The mystery shopper then provides a professional report on their experience, including specific details and feedback and opinions on their experience and what could be improved. It is important that this report be as clear and accurate as possible, so companies know they are receiving the most reliable information.

How to Sign Up

People who are interested in becoming one of their mystery shoppers must submit a valid email address to their website and they will be emailed an application as well as be given access to their “Pre-Application Information Guidelines” which explains their company guidelines for shop assignments.

The application will include questions about spelling, grammar, math, and logic, as well as a section of the application where you will have to provide a written narrative about your most recent fine or casual dining experience “in a clear and concise manner.”

Finally, you will also be asked to provide all relevant contact and demographic information and complete a “Shopper Qualifying Test.” Applicants must pass their test with a score of 7 or better in order to be eligible for hire.

A Closer Look also regularly hires both schedulers for their mystery shopping experiences, and editors to look over submitted reports. Unfortunately this website does not publish payment or rate information for their employees at this time.

  • Avoid this company.
  • A Closer Look is a completely legitimate company. They do not send out bogus checks, as falsely stated in one post above. I have been shopping for them for nine years and editing shopper reports for them for three years. The work has slowed down lately and the pay is low. However, if someone doesn't want to accept a small reimbursement or a small pay for some occasional fun and food, or the opportunity to work from anywhere, than one is free to not do it.
  • OMG! Clearly I am not the only one that has been screwed over by this company!! Don’t waste your time. Scheduler are unethical, outrageously rude, nasty and the company will always back them up even when you have written proof their liars. A Closer Look will do everything in their power to discredit you or find a way not to pay you. Since all of their shops are reimbursement only that means you are out the money and the hours of time it takes to complete their reports that they pay you nothing for. I mean really... do you need 7 sentences on if a bathroom is clean!? Ridiculous - don’t do it!!
    • Hey Carl, you are not the only one. Many have been screwed over using legitimate company names and forged checks. I had similar situation although it wasn't A Closer Look (although I was recently approached by someone at a closer look - similar scam - scratch off gift cards and send a picture which the real company - A Closer Look does not do.

I took mine to the Newtown PA Police Department and was instructed to deposit and "play" along. The police were waiting for person in Colorado for the wired money order. The check bounced and was fake of course. This was the same check used for over 150 fraud cases - wire fraud, mail fraud, etc. This guy made hundreds of thousands of dollars scamming people. It is amazing how many people deposited the checks and turned around and wired money orders within 24-48 hours.
  • Stay WAY away from A Closer Look!! They may be a legitimate company - but they will scam you by doing anything and everything in their power to try not to reimburse you. They basically don’t pay you for any of their shops like most mystery shopping companies would. It’s all reimbursement with A Closer Look and so you are out all the money until they decide if they are going to repay you. The shops are extremely long and soooo not worth the time. Save your time and money and stay far away from them.
  • HELLO ALL YOU PEOPLE WHO SAID YOUR WERE SCAMMED BY ACL. Have any of you people thought about the fact the scammers are using the legitimate name of "A Closer Look" to pull their scams? I work for a Legitimate manufacturer that was targeted by scammers and they were sending people cheques in our name. I did accounts payable so I knew our cheques REALLY good and I have to admit if it wasn't for the wrong series of cheque numbers I would not have been able to spot them. I had many people call me and ask about them but some didn't. These poor people who received the cheques did not do their homework and got taken but of course "we" (the manufacturer I work for) had nothing to do with it. The scammer had just created a fake version of our cheques to use and I will admit they were pretty good forgeries but NOT legitimate cheques and Yes I created and file of about 25 people (most did not cash but some did) and reported it to the police and they said the same thing. "Nothing we can do if they are in another country". If you get a cheque from a company look up their phone number or company website online and call or email them speak to their accounts payable dept. Do not call the number the scammers give you with the cheque. Bottom line is DO YOUR HOMEWORK people!
  • I am wondering is anyone in the Mystery Shopping world has heard of or done any word for "ShadowShopper"? I signed up for the free membership which they said I could see a partial list of jobs but I can't see anything when I log in except an offer to sign up for their "Gold Membership"? I can't get into my supposedly free membership. Now I know everybody say if you have to pay then its a scam but you have to pay to join the MSPA and that is considered to be the most legitimate website there is? Can anybody provide me with any information or give me their review on "ShadowShopper"? Maybe I need to hire a Mystery shopper to check them out?
  • It is easy to do the shops right. If you don't do it right it is your own fault.
    • Even if you do the shops right, the stuff I already filled I somehow gets lost when I hit send. Because the editor turns around and is asking me the questions I've answered! I've asked on several occasions to see my report and guess what? No reply.

I shop for several companies and none of the editors are as rude, and contradicting as these people are when they are supposedly giving advise. It's not advise either if I sent the report in telling you that I already forgot or didn't get something, that's just berating at that point.
    • A Closer Look

Really? Apparently I’m not alone here. I did a restaurant shop and spent over$50 to order. The food is god- awful. Multiple people continued to contact me requesting corrections. I complied. That is until I was asked to describe the hot tea. But I was told they sent the report to the restaurant. And yet the promised $75 gift card promised never materialized. Funny thing? I did this same shop twice prior.
  • I have done many excellent shops for them, but never again! They failed to reimbursed me for an expensive dinner because they claimed I "stole" a picture off of the internet. I think they want your work but try to get out of paying the more expensive shops. Stay away!
    • yes exactly!
    • I got a check in the mail and supposedly my pay is already included in the amount sent. Definitely doesn’t seem to be legit to me. I can’t find the Bank branch online anywhere. Just seems strange how they are going to send a complete stranger large amounts of money. What’s to stop the person from cashing their check and keeping their money. It’s all fishy to me
  • I been with ACL since 2014 I actually like some of the shops. I use to like the Blaze pizza shops but I had a bad experience with that online shop and I would prefer to do the shop at the location in any event they are always looking for shoppers to do the Blaze shops...they are just too darn picky with the timings of everything I know thats important but urgh Im not doing the Blaze shop. The pay is about a month after you do the shop atypical with other mystery shopping companies if you ask me. I like working with them never had an issue with my pay either.
  • lol you are correct at the Blaze pizza they are ALWAYS looking for shoppers to do them I stopped doing Blaze it was just too much with the timings for me an danyway the last visit was a Blaze online shop and I didnt like the shop at all I would prefer doing the shop at the location where I can SEE them making the pizza...
