PeoplePerHour is a website that connects small businesses with freelance workers from across the internet to help them complete small projects quickly and affordably.

According to PeoplePerHour.com, thousands of small businesses use them to hire remote, freelance workers to complete small projects, or just to work for a few hours a week. They claim this allows small businesses to stay flexible.

PeoplePerHour says this benefits small businesses because they can create virtual teams of people across the country – or even internationally – “without the red tape, cost, and bureaucracy of traditional employment.”

They have seven main categories of projects: IT/Programming, Marketing/Sales, Design, Admin/Secretarial, Writing/Translation, Accounting/Legal, or Other. Each category is broken into smaller, more specific categories so workers can something that works for them.

Both businesses and workers can register at PeoplePerHour.com for free. The website does take a small fee from workers, however, when they successfully book a job.

  • So here's the thing about PPH. It's great if you are a legit seller of quality work - I am a writer and get nicely paid jobs all the time through them. I have sound samples and only deal with established buyers.

But what I see a lot of is buyers wanting to pay $1 for 100 words, or want stuff done so cheap! I only search now for $$$ jobs - professional level. If you offer cheap pay - you get cheap work.

Also I would probably never use PPH for design work, or IT work... there are too many cheap bidders. With writing you kind of know what you are getting - based on samples. Over the past couple years - I have booked recurring jobs for magazines, blogs, video scripts... over 100 jobs. Now I am a full-time freelancer with repeat clients all over the world. You have to make yourself worth more than the bottom of the barrel - and there are buyers on there willing to pay for quality. You just have to find them.
    • ET, I agree to that one, the earned funds, should either be sent to the owner of the deactivated account, or to his counterpart as a refund. Also that should be publicly explained, (although this relations are private), just because so many reports.

And about the Iranian team, (proves your words), they have been working for a long time, and yah, at some point "Boy sorry but I just see you are an Iranian, God you should shut your account."

Aside of that, the buyers and sellers should be vary careful who they choose to do business with.

    • The issue that jumps out at me is that this poor guy's account was deactivated with money inside that he had earned, and PPH are not going to give him his money. It never happened to me but there are so many reports of accounts of long time users being suddenly disactivated and funnily enough usually when a big job has just been completed and there is a lot of money there. PPH either says that the user has violated terms and conditions but refuses to explain which terms and conditions exactly have been violated, or they say that the user has failed security checks - this is ridiculous because security checks should be completed before the account is approved if PPH is that concerned about it, by the time the user has been working and earning money it is too late to do security checks and say oh actually no you can't work on here - he already has. OK disactivate the account if there is a valid reason, but, give the guy his money, anything else is blatant dishonesty.
    • Absolutely agree, you shouldn't higher any buyer or work for any seller, just for the sake of it. The buyer should make sure that the seller understands the request and pay attention to details. The seller before bidding should make sure that the job is clear from A to Z, and case something is not clear, just do not bid or ask.

I am doing IT work and definitely, I bid if I am 100% sure, that I can do the job, if the proposal is clear, not common words.

Unfortunately lately PPH removed the ability to see the buyer's link before sending a proposal, so that lowers the amount of proposals I sent, I want to read reviews and read them in between the lines.

So I prefer, buyers making NOT generic but specific posts, and writing NOT generic but detailed and specific reviews so more or less try to protect myself in advance than cry out later.

      Hope my tips help

  • This is a strange site indeed. I actually found a few free lancers I used, a few good - one I use now in my company, and also a lot of really bad quality fee lancers, where we needed to redo the work.

I noticed small fees around in my account that I didnt know was the reason for this fee and I coulndt find it anywhere.

The site should connect sellers and buyers and take a fee. But they filled up my mail box with advertising slogans for work, like it was PPH that sells these services. Strange mix of roles that I do not like. I stopped using PPH and the owner contacted me PERSONALLY, if he could do something for me. Clearly they notice who stops buying and take action..crazy..thinking about the many users
  • Please stay far away from this site, it really is a platform for con artist to lure people that do not know any better. Anyone with a brain can see this is a scam site from miles away. Also most of the good review are done by the sellers themselves. Right off the bat you can tell this site is a con site given that their featured listings are fake instagram/ facebook / twitter followers. Most of the jobs offered can be generic mockups and the buyer will always be at a loss when the seller presents this "evidence" of a project fulfilled.
  • They all operate on a similar model by offering to be an escrow to ensure that as a buyer your work is complete and as a seller your money is received. However, due to numerous complaints and shoddy service. I have also witnessed major changes in the way things are done.

Firstly, they used to offer a telephone number and the people answering seemed very unprofessional and like they come from the council estate side of town. They would often fob you off with short answers and just keep you on the phone repeating sorry they can’t do anything and how sorry they are. Remaining apologetic, brash, rude and quite brazen.

My first bad situation was during a telesales campaign that I wanted to run. The seller was silly enough to use his real name and once I realised he was a convicted criminal. The scam all came to light. The escrow system doesn’t normally release the money straight away and it takes time to be released. This is used to protect sellers. However, on the other hand. If a seller releases the invoice and the buyer doesn’t reject it. The invoice and funds are unrecoverable and paid automatically. When signing up you do not need to put many details other than you name and email. This should show you that as a consumer if there is no such transparency. Why on earth would you purchase from the website.

The telesales agent made fake follow up emails to show he had done the work and then charged me around £300 - £500 pounds. I soon did a background check with a simple Google search and found out that he was a conman. He had burned down a hotel and been in prison. I was absolutely flabbergasted and shocked to say the least. I called up PPH and they didn’t seem to care that much. They said they deactivated his account and cannot recover the funds. I said to myself that I will recover through PayPal, as they kept repeating their garbage. Pending the claim that I made to PayPal. Their account was frozen as a result and they sent me a very rude email saying why did you not ask us for help and in a very rude tone said why did you do that??! To which I thought what kind of low company is this.

I also had solicitation through a fake call centre based in Dubai by an owner called Adam and another one who promised me targeted emails. They almost conned me and I was clever enough to see they were not genuine. There is a plethora of scam sellers online. Even the highly rated sellers are fake and with fake reviews. You will see so many similar names and it doesn’t take a genius to work it out. I believe that I was probably the only seller on there with real and genuine reviews!

Furthermore, I also had a buyer change his order half way through for a £3500 project. I had already completed the work and was left out of pocket by £1500 pounds!

I recently purchased a press release and it was completed and there were minor amendments. The buyer was highly rated on the site and so I felt that I was in good hands. However, the buyer quickly sent the invoice on first draft and I thought this was very cheeky and unprofessional. I didn’t reject the invoice, as I wanted to pay them and felt it was ok. The changes were just one or two words. The second part of the job was to send the PR. However, to date it has never been sent and I don’t even have a copy of the amended version. The invoice was then automatically released after 7 days and I was very busy. I thought he will reply and as a gesture of good will I didn’t reject it as we were having dialogue every few days. As soon as the invoice was released he has disappeared for around a month now. PPH state they cannot recover my funds. They are appalling and their behaviour is atrocious. They are one of the most unprofessional and low ended companies that I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. As a seller of hourlies and popular featured services. I would often have sellers threaten me to give free work and they would not release the invoices. They would blackmail me to do extra work that was not included in the cost given. This website is a sham through and through for decent freelancers. The only ones that are making money are the big scammer owners at PPH and the scam sellers. Stay away from PPH at all costs!
  • thieves, scam and liars. The worst staff in the world as well

lying, cheating scam with no morals at all

I really cant tell you how bad this firm is

Try and find a number or address for them, you wont be able to, thats how much they want to avoid people finding them when they rip you off

They will hold your money, even if there is no problem at all, for weeks and weeks, they lie and steal

I have reported them to every organisation and government body for money laundering, fraud and illegal money holding, let the fun begin

I have also contacted all the relevant Greek bodies as well (were they are registered) especially for Michael (customer service manager, thats a joke!) and their joke of a ceo for crimes and illegal activity as well

I have also started every single avenue open to me to get this scam firm investigated (guess what, been told that there are many investigations already ongoing!!) and closed down

I am in the process of contacting direct all of their investors as well with all the prove re their crimes and lies. Not hard to get these people emails and phone numbers, pm me if anyone else wants them. Get their investors to see what is happening and they pull the plug!
  • Been using Elance (now upwork) for 15 years. Been using Fiverr for a couple of years as well. Never had an issue. Spent $1200 on People Per Hour and really came to appreciate the other market places. Many of the Hourlies are outright fraudulent. Two of my orders were cancelled by the seller. PPH charged me a refund fee despite their official policy not to charge if seller is unable to deliver.Third order I received a substitute that was significantly inferior and i didnt want or need. Seller made numerous threats against me online via PPH message board. PPH refused to deal with the seller despite his threats and the fact that he is advertising services he cant fulfill. PPH makes a lot of their money off the refund fees from sellers who cancel.

Leaving feedback for a seller that doesnt perform is impossible. Believe that their system blocks feedback for "unsuccessful" transactions. So the worst sellers that cant perform do not get dinged for feedback. Oficially they ding sellers for cancellalations that isnt buyer initiated, but all cancellations are automatically considered buyer initiated regardless of circumstances, this way they can collect a 15% cancellation fee.

Other marketplaces have plenty of sellers and a robust monitoring system as well as established procedures and professional customer service staff.

Absolutely no reason to deal with People Per Hour.

  • I came across this site, i was initially impressed by it, that is until i started to bid for work, i'm more than happy for them to take a percentage of my hourly rate for any work i secure, but to pay them a fee upfront for my 'PROTECTION' DON'T MAKE ME LAUGH, my account was deleted immediately, i have no idea whether or not the work available is genuine or not, but i'm not paying anyone anything upfront for work that is not confirmed, this should be made absolutely clear when joining, my opinion of this site now... BIG SCAM!!
    • Agreed. Initially I thought it might be a new way to get more clients but looking at the services provided as fixed fee it's ridiculous and appalling to assume anyone can make a living from this, it's just another 'fiver' site in disguise.

I've worked in the creative sector for more than 25 years & I know from experience there's no amount of shortcuts/scripts etc that can create artwork to the sample standards for the sample fees and all it does is make my services look ridiculously expensive. The only service this site is offering is that it may direct the bad clients towards the hack workers allowing me to target my marketing to genuine clients I want to keep.

I've de-activated my account, but if people are happy to churn out artwork for £1 per hour minus 15% good luck to them.
  • it’s a big scam.
  • PPH dont use them they are a con site with bad web guys on there that will rip you off for you hard heard money don use them
