ProofreadAnywhere.com is the online home of the Proofread Anywhere, a website created by Caitlin Pyle, a professional proofreader who has been helping others work in proofreading since 2007.

Proofread Anywhere is also now the online home of Caitlin Pyle’s training course, Transcript Proofreading: Theory and Practice™, which is intended to help people with all the training they need to become a professional proofreader.

Though Caitlin says that becoming a proofreader won’t make anyone rich, she says it is an excellent way to earn side income or to even earn a full time income if you are willing to work hard enough.

Understanding the Course

Caitlin Pyle says that before she created her training course, there really wasn’t any real, fully comprehensive proofreading course available online. She wanted to change this, and create a course that didn’t just check the boxes on the skills that proofreaders needed, but that truly prepared people for what it is like to work in the proofreading industry.

To do this, her team reached out to actual court reporters to find out what makes a great proofreader? This feedback was used to create this course from top-to-bottom, resulting in a “thorough, well-planned, rigorous training program for transcript proofreaders.”

Their course covers all important topics, from “formatting and preferences to punctuation and parentheticals” so that their graduates are absolutely as prepared for the reality of working in proofreading as they can be.

How It Works

Proofread Anywhere says that they actually don’t believe that professional proofreading is cut out for everyone, so before you sign up for their paid course they ask all their students to take their seven day free course.

This free course provides prospective students with a new short lesson each day so they can see whether or not proofreading is something they enjoy and can do. If you decide to move forward with their course, you will then sign up for their 30 Day Jumpstart for $197.

Again, the website says they don’t even offer the option for their students to sign up for the entire course at one time, because if anything changes or you decide that this area of business just isn’t for you, Proofread Anywhere doesn’t want you to feel as though you are forced to continue or lose a huge investment.

If you continue past the 30 Day Jumpstart you will move to their 60 Day NextSteps course, which is priced at $400, and once that is successfully completed, you can move on to The Rest of the Course at $300, for a total of $897 for the entire course.

  • I am a graduate of the Proofread Anywhere course. Caitlin Pyle is very "vocal" and up front about how this course is NOT a get rich quick scheme. In fact, you only get out of it what you put into it.

I started the course while I was pregnant, started my business (and marketing) with a newborn over a year and a half ago, and started graduate school a year ago. Obviously, I have had to take less proofreading work during the school year so that I could focus on my classwork and research. As such, my income from proofreading took a hit.

Does that mean Caitlin's course is not worth it? Not at all! Even while carving out time for school, I still make a minimum of $200 per month. The summer and winter breaks are at least twice that, if not more. Of course, I would like to be making more, but that means growing the business past what I can handle before I get my master's degree, so I am taking things slow. That is on ME, not on Proofread Anywhere or Caitlin Pyle, whose course is one of the best online courses I have seen out there.

Are there typographical and grammatical errors in the course? Yes, but she welcomes correction, provided those doing the correcting know what they are talking about. Caitlin's transcript proofreading course is very specifically geared toward proofreading for court reporters, and uses a specific set of style guides and references (Lillian Morson's English Guide for Court Reporters and Margie Wakeman-Wells's Bad Grammar/Good Punctuation, to name just two). She has written her course with these style guides in mind.

I cannot speak to the general proofreading course, as I have not taken it, but I believe the students of that course follow the Chicago Manual of Style.

Given what I know now, I absolutely would make the same decision I made two years ago: to take the Proofread Anywhere course.
  • I began Caitlin's Proofread Anywhere course in January 2017 and finished it in August. She promises to respond to personal emails, so I tried her out. I emailed and she emailed me back. If you don't understand something about the course, just reach out and ask. I too was worried about it being a scam, but I quickly realized it was a valid course and worked hard at completing it. You can look me up on Facebook, Denise Minge Proofreading, and ask me questions about the course if you want to as well.

I got my first job from a court reporter in September 2017, and by the end of November, I had been paid more than enough to cover the costs of taking the course. It's not free, and it's not easy, and anyone who tries to tell you otherwise is lying! Caitlin herself tells those taking the course that it's hard work. The course is also broken up into different sections so that you don't pay for the whole course if you realize this isn't the job for you. Marketing is no joke. It's hard work and it takes some initiative and guts. Caitlin doesn't hand out clients to her course graduates, but she does teach us how to market.

Last year my husband and I had to buy a vehicle unexpectedly and had to take out a loan from the bank to cover part of the cost. The income I earn from proofreading helped us to pay our loan off early. It feels good to be debt free.

This course isn't for everyone by any means. If you aren't a word nerd, if you aren't detail oriented, if you aren't self-motivated, you should probably try something else. However, if you don't mind hard work and you love words and finding errors, you should give it a try! It's been almost a year since I started working for myself. I've wondered before if I might ever get sick of doing this job, and I haven't yet.
  • It's true. There are lots of other courses online that won't cost as much as Proofread Anywhere. But I'm so grateful I didn't take them. This course taught me much more than basic grammar. I learned a lot about myself. I worked on my mindset. I understand marketing. I have a clear vision of what I want for my business. I have skills and confidence I didn't have before. And I have lifetime access to the course.

I had to put in long hours of study and realize this wasn't going to happen overnight, but it was totally worth it. I've got the tools to build what I need and want for the future. As someone who's "been there," it's worth it.
  • I finished the PA course in the summer of

2017 and am now I’m business for myself. I’m not getting rich by any means, but it allowed me to leave my full-time job that was sucking the life and joy out of me. It’s hard work, but the course definitely prepared me for that.

And the best part is we graduates help each other out with nerdy grammatical issues.

Taking and completing this class has changed my life for the better.
    • Ugh. I hate doing this stuff on my phone with my fat fingers. And then I made the horrible mistake of not proofreading my own post!

Please don’t let that reflect on Caitlin and her course. I got in a hurry.

I am legit and so is the course.

And I honestly do a much, much better job with my clients than I did with my post!
  • This course is thorough! It does require hard work to successfully complete each section. I appreciated that the course is available to pay for and complete as time and finances allow. I am now happily working as a successful transcript proofreader. My clients are happy with my work, and one just thanked me profusely for “being competent!!!”
  • I have taken the course and passed the tests. It is a great way to find your niche in the proofreading business. I have been very successful. I feel this course gave validity to my proofreading skills.
  • Proofread Anywhere provided me, a former stenomask court reporter, the opportunity to stretch myself via challenging coursework, thereby truly earning an A+ passing grade and a fantastic work-from-home job!
  • I've been working as a proofreader regularly as a result of this course, and I'm making good money. I have a handful of regular clients that are fantastic to work with. I am able to stay home with my kids, work during naps, or go sit in a coffee shop to work when my husband comes home (during busy weeks). If I hadn't found this opportunity, I'd probably be back working for someone else by now and trying to figure out childcare costs. If that works for others, great. It wasn't what I wanted. I'm building a house soon with my family, and this proofreading business I've started has made it possible to continue to stay home with my kids while also helping my family pay the bills. It's not for everyone, but if you have an eye for detail and want the freedom to be able to make your own schedule and call your own shots in your career, it's a fantastic field with a very supportive community. It's not always super exciting. Sometimes it does feel like work. But when you're at home in your pajamas on a cold winter day or holding your baby while she sleeps because she's sick, it's something to be thankful for to be work from your couch. Also, anything of value that equips you with the skills to make money is going to cost something, and a lot of work went into the course to teach this. I started my business in November 2017. By January 1st, 2018, I had sent out my first invoice, and by March 2018 I had made back everything I had put into it. Right now, I've stopped taking new clients because I have enough work and want to enjoy some summer fun with my kids. In September, I plan on hitting up the many resources I have to find new clients so that I have more work while my little one is in Pre-K. It's legit. I, also, started on this road by Googling "Caitlin Pyle Scam," but I'm glad I made the choice to purchase the course. -- Clara @ Legal Eye Proofing
  • I completed the Transcript Proofreading course and launched my business in 2016. The training equipped me with the skills to do excellent work that has landed me happy and loyal clients. When you enroll in the PA courses, you get access to the private FB support groups, which are, hands down, the best social media groups I have ever been a part of. Everyone is supportive, encouraging, and helpful in answering any questions posed in the groups. I can wholeheartedly endorse PA as a legit company as it has allowed me to earn an income while raising my kids at home.
  • Caitlin's intensive online training program in general proofreading helped me hone my skills in proofreading. Building an online business in proofreading is no child's play. However, at the end of the day, you'll be glad that you put in the effort.
