Shadow Shopper is an online mystery shopping program. It acts as the middleman between hopeful shoppers and large mystery shopping companies. They provide their members with lists and email notifications of which companies currently have available work.

ShadowShopper was one of the first companies to create an online database and service for these types of opportunities, they have been around since 2002.

They are now one of the largest providers of these types of jobs and boast a database of over six million accounts. They claim to have anywhere from 120,000 – 160,000 new jobs posted every month.

They also have working relationships with 250+ mystery shopping, merchandising, demonstrating and market research companies in North America and are members of the Market Research Association and World Alliance for Retail Excellence & Standards.

How Does Mystery Shopping Work?

Mystery shopping is a great way to participate in market research and earn some extra money. Companies pay mystery shoppers to visit their establishments and interact with their employees, ultimately reporting and evaluating on the entire experience.

This arrangement greatly benefits both parties. As a shopper you get paid and rewarded with free food, items, or services. Meanwhile the business owner gets a detailed account of what goes on in their shop while the boss is away.

The information that you provide is then used to improve employee practices and finetune the overall shopping experience.

Depending on the job you may be asked to report on a variety of aspects such as restroom cleanliness, temperature of the food, timeliness of service, and so on. The types of businesses that you will be asked to frequent vary as well with restaurants, banks, and theaters in the mix.

Upon completion of the tasks you will be paid after submitting your reports and/or invoices.

Cost and Price Plans:

Shadow Shopper membership is based on two levels, Gold and Bronze with corresponding levels of amenities.

The free membership allows you to apply for job listings posted more than 7 days ago. You also get added to their database for potential employers to contact you directly. You can also apply for Promoted Jobs – ones posted on top of the list due to immediate need of shoppers).

The Gold membership costs $6.95 per month and provides you with all of the benefits of the Bronze membership plus access to the most recently posted jobs. You also get first priority listing when employers search Shadow Shopper’s database.

Customer Support:

If you need assistance you can submit their online contact form and someone will get back to you shortly. They also have a helpful FAQ section and an article explaining how mystery shopping works for your benefit.

Online Reviews/Complaints:

There are mixed reviews for Shadow Shopper, and they currently have a D rating with the BBB. However in regards to those complaints it is clear that the company has made an effort to resolve the issues with their unsatisfied customers.

Some other issues that people have posted about are in regards to the amount of jobs that are available – however keep in mind that there is a difference between the paid and free memberships, so those paying will have a much higher chance of landing a job.

Overall mystery shopping can be a fun way to get some extra cash but know that these jobs are in high demand and don’t pay that much.

Competitors and Alternatives:

If you do not want to work with Shadow Shopper you can take the time to seek out local market research companies and try to find these opportunities yourself. Some other companies that provide listings for mystery shopping include A Closer Look, ShoppingJobs.com, and Jobs2Shop.com.

  • i was given a money order to cash and use through western union and the money order was a fake,if i had put that in my bank account it would have set me back and it would have got me into trouble with the law,i think this is bull sh4t,i have been trying to get a job and then get taken by this company is cr3p ,i will make the news papers know about it and we will work to get them shut down,
  • The website for shadow is very poor, not user friendly at all.
  • I used shadow shopper and made my money Back tenfold. Not sure why everyone's complaining.
  • Worked for another mystery shopping firm and never had to pay a dime to join. This is not a good place to work. Only time I get anything is for on line surveys. Only way to shop or buy is if I upgrade for $4.95. WARNING do not do it or you will pay dearly.............
  • DO NOT WORK FOR THIS COMPANYMy experience with Shadow Shopper has been less than favorable in every way. Since signing up over a year ago I've only been accepted for one assignment; which turned into a garish experience. I was called on a Thurs. afternoon and asked to backfill an associate that wasn't able due to illness to complete the assignment of delivering fundraising team brochures to businesses for the Leukemia Society in multiple zip codes in the area. The assignment was due on Sat, she said because it was late notice she would give me until Mon. to complete. I in turn had to contact the associate that was ill and make arrangements to pick up the materials from her directly. I then learned that the materials had to be prepped, sorted, and bundled. This took several hours as there were 200 locations and 10 packets per location across the city. I completed the tasks, delivery and reporting daily, only to be told that I would not be paid until an auditor verified my deliveries within the next MONTH.... I continued to follow up and was told several times that the audit had not been completed yet and I would not be paid until audit completion. 3 MONTHS after my services to this company I was told in a follow up, that the audit had finally occurred the past week week and that 1 location (which has since closed their business) did not have the brochures on display, therefore I will not receive pay owed to me. They claimed default on the contract for not fully completing delivery of the brochures. This company was difficult to work with, disorganized, unethical, misrepresenting themselves as a service company. I have decided to let go of the ordeal and consider this my contribution to the Leukemia Society...
  • I almost signed up with Shadow Shopper, but first I decided to research them. And, WOW the stories I read. Thanks to all you for showing me they are a scam before I gave them my credit card information.
  • I joined Shadow Shoppers over 3 years ago. I used the free trial and then went on to keep the service for another 3 months. During the time I was with this service I signed up with 8 different companies who have kept me busy for over 2 years. I recommend this company to everyone I meet who voices the interest in doing this type of thing. I work a full time job and then go have a burger, or Latte before going home. That means I have just made a few dollars for doing something I enjoy anyway.

For those who say this company is no good they forgot to read the information supplied at signup.
  • My only question to everyone saying it is a scam, is why would you give a credit card number for a "free trial"? If you are giving anyone a credit card, assume its going to be charged at some point if you don't change anything. It's common sense people.
  • Hello I paid $4.95 for the first month I cancelled before my month was due, this website is not worth the money all the jobs are far and they pay little, I got one assignment handling out brochures the money is not enough for the amount of hours and effort you have to work, don't waste your money and time with this website, you better of looking for another job.
  • I am still trying to get my money refunded off credit card from paypal. I cancelled right after the free trial and it is on my payday documents but I still am being charged every couple of weeks and I am really getting ticked off. Keep running into brick walls and can't get any answers or money back. STAY AWAY FOLKS ..THESE PEOPLE ARE FRAUDS.....
