Western Sky Financial

Western Sky Financial is an installment loan company who claims that you can get up to $2,525 in your checking account overnight by completing an application that takes less than 5 minutes to fill out.

Western Sky Financial operates within the boundaries of the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation, which is a sovereign nation within the United States. It is owned by an individual within that nation and not the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation itself.

Recently, the Western Sky commercials have been generating a lot of buzz online, mostly because people find them humorous but also because some people are questioning the claims made in the commercial, specifically your ability to receive thousands of dollars overnight.

It Is Expensive, But There Is No Collateral Required

In the commercial, the spokesman claims “Yes, the money is expensive, but there is no collateral required.” This is a common theme within the payday loan industry.

Before you borrow money from Western Sky, look at their Rates page which describes the APR as well as the loan fee that will be assessed depending on the loan amount you are requesting.

The APR, or Annual Percentage Rate, is the amount of interest you will be required to pay back within a year. When loan companies do not require collateral or high credit scores to approve a loan, it is generally because the APR they charge is extremely high.

In the case of Western Sky, the lowest available APR is 116.73% and can be as high as 215.03%. This means that if you borrow $5,000 from Western Sky at 116.73% APR and take the full 84 months to pay it back, you will have paid $35,872.72 in interest.

The Bottom Line on Western Sky

In the US, individual states have laws that govern payday loan companies and are meant to protect the borrowers from extreme APRs and unrealistic payback schedules.

In the past when Reviewopedia has reviewed online payday loan companies, I have pointed out that borrowing from an online company that is based in another state may make it difficult for your state laws to protect you from predatory lending practices.

In the case of Western Sky, this is further complicated by the fact that Western Sky is based in the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation, which acts as an independent nation within the US, meaning that you could potentially have no protection from them at all.

  • If you've seen the latest Western Sky commercials for their $10,000 loan, read the small print at the bottom of the screen. According to the interest rate and terms, your payments will be almost $900.00 per month and you'll have paid them a total of nearly $87,000 dollars by the time you pay off the original $10K that you borrowed. That's outrageous!!
    • I'm glad I read these reviews. I'm looking to buy an electric bike, which will be only mode of transportation. When I consider the HIGH monthly payments for a short term loan, I can save that amount and pay cash for a bike in a couple of months. Sure, I'd like one now but the should-be-ilegal interest rate is SO NOT worth it.
    • Thanks for the info we're in a bind now but I will keep praying that something comes along WE WILL NOT CALL WESTERN SKY! I'm so glad I saw this post I was telling my niece to call them today! NO WAY!!!!
  • i never even got an answer
  • they denied me they are very sorry.......!!!!!!!
  • Loan is immediately sold to cash call. Once they have it they harass you non stop. I asked for paper verfication that they had aquired the loan because it sounded like a scam. They called me every 30 minutes every day even sunday until i verbally agreed to their terms even though i told them i agreed to nothing until i had recieved paper verification. They will continue to use that tactic anytime you do not agree with what tell you to do. Plus everything has a fee attached to it!
  • Is this company legit
  • Before this economy went to crap so called helpful banks was not given out loans to people with less then excellent credit, even after a certain president gave them a not needed at all stimulus plan. I don't blame western sky because they found a loophole in the system but I blame the companies and car dealers for denying loans for such hard times...
  • I was one of the dummies that took out a loan with these jerks...The first thing I did was change my on line banking user I.d. and password... I did'nt like that you had to give them your user I .d. to look at your bank statement. I have changed my direct deposit from work to another acct. I just wish I would have read my bad reviews on here first.
  • Hi All:

Remember, the little people only get ahead by uniting and standing strongly together. LET'S TEACH THESE BULLYS A LESSON ABOUT TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE POOR!

    Best, Mike ;-)
  • I thought this was about scams not race...do not use this platform to spread ignorance and bigotry. . Native Americans have been lied to abused and betrayed by the white race sense day one when the first trusting chief "touched hand to pen" on the first of many treaties that were never kept. Do the loan don't do the loan... But get educated on history not bigotry ....

    damn
    • I am quite confident that it's physically impossible to taste bigotry. So why don't you "Get Educated".
    • Under u.s. law this would be illegal. Once the loan is paid you will pay more interest than what u get out of it. But since this is on a reservation there are no laws. So yes this is a scam in my mind and I'm not trying to be racist
    • You say dont spred ignorance. Come on. This company is a complete ripoff and dont use it as a excuse to "get even" with the whities. What a jerk you are.
    • Don't be so touchy: all that is pointed out here is the jurisdiction and the (lack of) recourse you may have in case of a problem because of it. Nothing to do with race.
  • YOU MUST ALL FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THE FBI. Please see the disclaimer on the bottom of the www.westernsky.com website: "WESTERN SKY FINANCIAL is owned wholly by an individual Tribal Member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and is not owned or operated by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe or any of its political subdivisions. WESTERN SKY FINANCIAL is a Native American business operating within the exterior boundaries of the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation, a sovereign nation located within the United States of America. Western Sky loans are not available to consumers in California, Colorado, Maryland, Missouri, South Dakota, Washington and West Virginia. © 2012 Western Sky Financial, LLC. All Rights Reserved. 612 E Street Timber Lake, SD 57656 (877)982-1679" They are SAYING THEY ARE NOT under the jurisdiction of the US local laws But you can file a complaint against them with the FBI and maybe also against the TV network that aired their ad, because they are "aiding and abetting" in the commission of a crime that falls under the RICOH statutes! Why? Because they charge 89%, yes, that is right, eighty nine percent! Higher than organized crime used to charge under Al Capone!!
    • Touche, but it is legal. It is all about the American Dream and they took advantage of it. This is not a racial issue but an American issue. I am a proud American but I am in tuned with our great history. Brush up on your American history and then point your finger were it truly belongs.
    • The atrocious APR and loan fees for the different loan amounts is disclosed on their site. If you borrow from them anyway, the stupidity is on you.
    • So are they legal in GA?
