Shadow Shopper is an online mystery shopping program. It acts as the middleman between hopeful shoppers and large mystery shopping companies. They provide their members with lists and email notifications of which companies currently have available work.

ShadowShopper was one of the first companies to create an online database and service for these types of opportunities, they have been around since 2002.

They are now one of the largest providers of these types of jobs and boast a database of over six million accounts. They claim to have anywhere from 120,000 – 160,000 new jobs posted every month.

They also have working relationships with 250+ mystery shopping, merchandising, demonstrating and market research companies in North America and are members of the Market Research Association and World Alliance for Retail Excellence & Standards.

How Does Mystery Shopping Work?

Mystery shopping is a great way to participate in market research and earn some extra money. Companies pay mystery shoppers to visit their establishments and interact with their employees, ultimately reporting and evaluating on the entire experience.

This arrangement greatly benefits both parties. As a shopper you get paid and rewarded with free food, items, or services. Meanwhile the business owner gets a detailed account of what goes on in their shop while the boss is away.

The information that you provide is then used to improve employee practices and finetune the overall shopping experience.

Depending on the job you may be asked to report on a variety of aspects such as restroom cleanliness, temperature of the food, timeliness of service, and so on. The types of businesses that you will be asked to frequent vary as well with restaurants, banks, and theaters in the mix.

Upon completion of the tasks you will be paid after submitting your reports and/or invoices.

Cost and Price Plans:

Shadow Shopper membership is based on two levels, Gold and Bronze with corresponding levels of amenities.

The free membership allows you to apply for job listings posted more than 7 days ago. You also get added to their database for potential employers to contact you directly. You can also apply for Promoted Jobs – ones posted on top of the list due to immediate need of shoppers).

The Gold membership costs $6.95 per month and provides you with all of the benefits of the Bronze membership plus access to the most recently posted jobs. You also get first priority listing when employers search Shadow Shopper’s database.

Customer Support:

If you need assistance you can submit their online contact form and someone will get back to you shortly. They also have a helpful FAQ section and an article explaining how mystery shopping works for your benefit.

Online Reviews/Complaints:

There are mixed reviews for Shadow Shopper, and they currently have a D rating with the BBB. However in regards to those complaints it is clear that the company has made an effort to resolve the issues with their unsatisfied customers.

Some other issues that people have posted about are in regards to the amount of jobs that are available – however keep in mind that there is a difference between the paid and free memberships, so those paying will have a much higher chance of landing a job.

Overall mystery shopping can be a fun way to get some extra cash but know that these jobs are in high demand and don’t pay that much.

Competitors and Alternatives:

If you do not want to work with Shadow Shopper you can take the time to seek out local market research companies and try to find these opportunities yourself. Some other companies that provide listings for mystery shopping include A Closer Look, ShoppingJobs.com, and Jobs2Shop.com.

  • Contact Consumer Affairs in your state about them. I had a similar problem with NetZero and Consumer Affairs fixed it for me.
  • Somehow they obtained my bank info and charged my account? I did I job for Stanton optical. I kept getting a run around and never have received the pay a promised. and to the Db New yor person I would suggest that you were paid to say they were good no one else has. I think we have enough info to go to the Attorney Generals office and file to put them out of business. Anyone know how I can get my money?
  • I urge everyone to report this scam company "shadowshopper" to the Federal Trade Commission
  • PLEASE do not trust this horrible company!!!!!!! It is a scam and they are truly dishonest. They will ask for your money for a trial, then will charge you without your authorization. Beware, they are the worst company with very cheap jobs. They need to be shut down and I will be first to make sure this happens. I asked very nicely for a refund and JONATHAN told me there was no way that could happen. Imagine that!!!! They certainly took my money, amazingly can't refund it. So you see who they are? Do yourself a favor and move onto a reputable mystery shopping company who doesn't charge you and have good paying jobs. They are out there, but this isn't one to work for. I'm sure the employees are all dishonest, why else would they continue to work for scum and scam. I truly don't see how Johnathan and the other pitiful employees sleep at night. I told Johnathan I was going to write a bad review, and he still didn't help me. How sad, right? And I'm not done yet, oh no!!!!!! I just hope he is enjoying his pitiful job now, because he probably won't have it long. All he had to do was refund me, that's all!!!!!!!!!!!! Please run from this company!
  • What a rip off. They charged me $210 for a renewing membership I never signed up for. Don't use them.
  • WORSE WEBSITE EVER.I AM A STUDENT AND I WAS LOOKING FOR A WAY TO HAVE SOME EXTRA MONEY SO I DECIDED TO DO THE MONTH FREE TRIAL, ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT I COULD NOT GET ANY JOB BECAUSE I DO NOT HAVE A SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER, SINCE I AM AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT. ANYWAY, AFTER I REALIZED THAT (ABOUT A WEEK), I STOPPED USING IT. I WAS CHARGED THE TWO NEXT MONTHS 29,99 FOR SOMETHING THAT I DIDN'T EVEN USE, JUST BECAUSE THE AUTOMATIC MONTHLY RENEWAL WAS TURNED ON, WITHOUT MY PERMISSION. IN THE EXACT DAY I TRIED TO CONTACT SHADOW SHOPPER TO ASK FOR A REFUND (IN MY ACCOUNT WAS STILL PENDING), AT LEAST FOR THE LAST MONTH, SINCE THE ONE BEFORE IT WAS MY FAULT I DIDN'T NOTICE I WAS BEING CHARGED. WHAT I GOT WAS A SUPER RUDE CUSTOMER SERVICE PERSON AT THAT ONLINE CHAT THING WHO TOLD ME TO GO TALK TO JOHNATON, WHO WAS ALSO RUDE AND DID NOT HELP ME.

THIS IS VERY FRUSTRATING BECAUSE NOW MY ACCOUNT IS OVERDRAWN, I WILL HAVE TO PAY FEES PLUS I WON'T GET TO EAT LUNCH FOR THE WEEK.AND I CAN NOT EVEN BE A MYSTERY SHOPPER TO PAY BACK, BECAUSE AS I MENTIONED I DON'T HAVE A SOCIAL SECURITY.
  • I went one this website and pushed the edit botton next to cancel my membership but because they say I did not write save they billed me $29.95 off an account I gave them no permission to take!!!! Now they continue to be "off line" on there so called live web site so I can not speak to anyone or have my money refunded! Please DO NOT sign up for this, it is a scam!!!
  • I made the mistake of signing up for a shadow shopper, when I relized what it entailed I stopped answering their ads. It never stopped, and now they they have gotten into my personal bank account and have charged mr money for something I looked into 7 months ago. I am not sire what to do, I called and have left messages that they do not respond to!!! If their is a way to stop this please some one help me.
  • i have never signed up for this but for 6 months they have taken money out of my account illegally without my permission .is the biggest scam I have ever seen
  • Do not bother spending your time and money. They flood your email with jobs that will not result in anything. If you try to sign up for a job, it sends you to another application that must be submitted to another company. Not user friendly. Automatic renewal goes from $5 to $30.
